Counterbalance valves offer a unique combination of features, combining the capabilities of reverse free-flow check valves and pilot-operated relief valves in a single solution. In a hydraulic cylinder system, the free-flow check valve permits unimpeded oil flow into the hydraulic cylinder, enabling the load to be raised. When the control valve is moved to the centre position, the pressure caused by the load forces the check valve to close.
As long as this pressure remains below the relief function setting, the load remains stationary until the control valve is moved to lower the load. Subsequently, the pressure on the other side of the cylinder, as well as the pressure caused by the load, acts on the pilot port and exceeds the pressure relief setting.
